INFORMATION FOR MENTORS
WHY MENTOR?
- Biblical mandate:
- “We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ†Colossians 1:28 [+/-]
- Also- Matt 28:19 [+/-] & 20, Titus 2:4 [+/-] & 5, Titus 2:7 [+/-] & 8, Col 1:9-12 [+/-]
- Working with a few for the sake of many eg. Jesus and disciples, Moses and Joshua, Elijah and Elisha. The church is built up and God is glorified.
WHAT IS MENTORING
- Also known as coaching, discipleship, one to one work
- “One Christian taking the initiative with another individual to help them know Christ better and obey him more fully, through studying the Scriptures, prayer (for and with them) and sharing one’s life with them – and leaving the results to God†Sophie De Witt
- Aim: To help mentees know Christ better. To make mentors out of mentees!
WHAT IS IT NOT
- Not about becoming just like your mentor – but to grow in Christlikeness
- Not counseling
- Not about being exclusive
QUALIFICATIONS
- Commitment to the Lord Jesus. Christians who are standing firm and seeking to live life for God’s glory.
- Love for Christ and one another. John 13:34, 1 [+/-] Thes 2:8 [+/-]
- Knowledge of the Bible, believe its God’s word, know main doctrines, know the gospel.
- We must be able to listen and be open and honest
- Make the time
BENEFITS
- Leading others through Bible study helps you to learn more of God’s word and grow in dependence on Christ.
- Provides accountability, encouragement and affirmation
PRACTICAL COMMITMENT, WHAT MENTORS DO
- Start with time commitment of how long to meet for eg. 6 months, 1 year.
- Commitment to pray for mentee regularly
- Time each week preparing Bible study prior to meeting
- Meeting weekly for half hour-hour to study Bible and pray
- Occasional social events to get to know your mentee eg. Lunch/coffee/movie together
