Church History
History is the fibers of woven love. Without history, we are lost.
Without HIS STORY, we are also lost – forever.
By faith, in the year of our Lord January 18,1880, twenty Servants came together from the Mother Church (Rocky Creek) to form what was then Waynesboro Baptist Church. The church was completed and dedicated in May 16,1880 at a cost of $3,000.00 and seated 250. The first Pastor was the Rev. W. L. Kilpatrick who served the first year without pay and would serve until 1896 earning no more than $300 per year.
On the 50th anniversary, the Golden Jubilee came about and the church was renamed First Baptist Church since it was the “first”Baptist church formed in Waynesboro.
With the Centennial in 1980, a Committee was formed and a history of the church was undertaken and published. “Keeping House For God”, 1880-1980, by Kathleen Deck Johnson.
From Waynesboro Baptist Church, 1880, to present day First Baptist Church, many dedicated Servants of the Lord have toiled to do the work of the Lord.
Today, the church flourishes with devout disciples who carry on the tradition of Reaching Up in Worship, Reaching Out in Witness, and Reaching Across in Love to spread the Word of our Lord and Savior.
Anchored by the love and guidance of our beloved Pastor, Brother Al, our calling is to “work the fields” for the Lord and gather in the harvest of souls so that on that Glorious day when our Lord returns, He will delight in us and bestow upon us the gift that is eternal life and raise us up to a Kingdom He has prepared.
In all of it’s grandeur and beauty, Fellowship Hall is HIS Hall. A place where we gather to celebrate His fellowship, His glory, His love, and His coming.
Our new Fellowship Hall houses administration, a commercial-style kitchen where our family night cook Sharon Lowe and her staff prepare our feasts, and a state-of-the-art audio/video system with overhead projection.
